What is Japanese business etiquette?

September 2025

Recentrly, I was asked to give some guidance on the subject to a University client who is preparing for a visit to Japan. So I shared the below.

Simply put, it all boils down to Politeness and Respect.

Here are some basic rules to remember:
1. Be punctual (= 10 minutes early).
2. Bring (a LOT of) business cards and follow the "Meishi" exchange ritual.
3. Greet while bowing (30+ degrees and hold for a few seconds)
4. Address the counterpart using "-san" after his/her last name throughout.
5. Dress professionally (= simple dark-coloured suit).
6. Be mindful of hierarchy & seniority.
7. Wait for your seat to be shown.
8. Do not interrupt the person speaking.
9. Bring & accept gifts

Acting in line with the local culture goes a long way for a great relationship with Japanese counterpart.
